When Covid-19 first spread, safety measures were heavily implemented by the government in hopes of controlling the outbreak. We were strictly advised to quarantine ourselves for a period of time and travelling was restricted.
Although some restrictions have now been gradually lifted, this does not necessarily mean that we should take the matter lightly. We should take preventative steps to combat the spread of the disease. By complying with healthy practices, we can protect ourselves, our community and people of higher risks.
Since most services have resumed operations here, bus travel is slowly picking up pace. Considering the concerns and risks associated with Covid-19 and public transportation, here is a guide on how to travel safely by bus.
The spread of coronavirus can be abated and we can travel safely on public transportation so long as we follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) religiously.
Avoid Touching Surfaces
We now know that the contagious disease spreads primarily through the droplets we transmit when we cough, sneeze, talk or even exhale. Those droplets can easily land on or be transferred to surfaces nearby. For example, without a mask and proper hygiene, those who are unwell can simply spread a contagious wherever they go.
Even though we will not contract Covid-19 by simply touching a contaminated surface, it can still spread when we touch our mouth, nose or eyes. When exposed, we can get infected without proper hygiene practices and become a risk to others around us.
It is important to note that we can prevent infection through disciplined behaviour and the strict observance of general hygiene measures. Thus, we should restrain ourselves from touching high-traffic areas such as kiosks, ticket machines, handrails, elevator buttons and many more. Otherwise, use an object such as a pen, a piece of tissue or even our knuckle to press an elevator button. When opening doors, we can use your elbow or the back of our hand as well.
Practice Social Distancing
There are many things we can do to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and that includes practicing social distancing. This practice aims to reduce close contact between people. It essentially helps to reduce the potential risk of being exposed to those who are infected and contaminated surfaces.
Although the chances of contracting the disease differs depending on the individual, anyone can get and spread the virus. Everyone is in this crisis together, hence, we have a role to play in curbing the spread of this virus.
The most effective way is to stay home as much as possible and avoid crowded places. This is especially for those who are experiencing symptoms like fever, dry cough and fatigue. If your symptoms get worse, make sure to call your doctor right away and to get tested.
Nonetheless, if travel is essential to your job or you have important errands to run, you can follow SOPs for a safe commute. When travelling on a bus, only occupy designated spaces and maintain safe distance between passengers. Be sure to stay at least 2 metres away from one another. This should be practiced whether it be indoor or outdoor spaces.
Practice Hand Hygiene
As the world struggles to cope with Covid-19, one of the most effective actions to combat the disease is good hand hygiene. It can significantly reduce the spread of the virus and prevent a range of other infections as well. That said, we urge community members to adopt frequent hand hygiene into their daily practices.
Everyone can help reduce the spread of the virus by washing our hands with soap and water often. This includes before and after a meal, after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing and after going to the bathroom. Your soap does not have to be an expensive brand, nor be labelled “antibacterial”, any form of soap works just fine.
How to wash your hands properly?
Step 1: Wet your hands with clean, running water
Step 2: Apply enough soap and lather your hands by rubbing them together
Step 3: Scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails for 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice
Step 4: Rinse your hands well under clean water
Step 5: Dry your hands using a clean cloth or air dry them
If soap is not available near you, use hand sanitizers containing at least 60% alcohol. Remember to also clean and disinfect frequently used surfaces such as countertops, tables and doorknobs. Other objects such as mobile phones, keys and wallets should be disinfected regularly as well. Additionally, we also encourage community members to use cashless methods of payment where possible.
At present, there should be public hand hygiene stations that are easily accessible. These stations can be found at the entrance of a mall, office buildings and transport locations especially airports. The practice of hand hygiene is a critical measure that we can take to protect ourselves and others.
As for public transportation, buses and other modes of transport are disinfected daily. Let’s do our part in keeping our hands clean to cut the risk of virus spread on public transportation.
Wear Face Masks
As we embrace the new normal, we must adhere to the advice given by the government. When we comply to these essential practices in our day-to-day lives, we can help break the chain of transmission.
The use of face masks is meant to protect others in case the wearer is unknowingly infected. It is now compulsory to wear face masks in public settings, especially in enclosed spaces like buses. For maximum protection, wear your mask correctly by not putting it around the chin or leave your nose uncovered. Remember to not touch especially the front of the mask, if you do, wash your hands or sanitize immediately to disinfect.
You are able to remove face masks when eating or drinking. However, the removal of face masks should be done carefully by holding the ear loops or ties only. It is important to wash or sanitize your hands before and after touching your face mask. For longer journeys on the bus or more time out in public, take more than one face mask and a plastic bag for disposal.
